Altra Lone Peak 9 vs Lone Peak 8

Lone Peak 9 or Lone Peak 8? Here’s how they compare on feel, fit, brand specs and price, from the fitting team at The Run House.

The short answer

The Lone Peak 9 replaced the Lone Peak 8.

A more natural flex and a little more ground feel, with an optional Vibram outsole on the Lone Peak 9+. Same zero drop and price.

What changed

  • Ride: More natural flex and a little more ground feel. Same zero drop.
  • Outsole: MaxTrac outsole as standard, or Vibram on the Lone Peak 9+.
  • Price: Same price.
  • On the run: Feels about the same.
  • Measured: 0.7 oz heavier. Heel stack and drop about the same.

On the run

Lone Peak 9: Zero drop, room for your toes. Low, firm and zero drop, so you feel the trail. A rock plate takes the edge off sharp stuff, but it isn’t a cushioned shoe.

Lone Peak 8: The zero-drop trail classic. Low, flexible and natural, with a barefoot-like feel on a stable, grounded platform. Doubles as a hiking shoe.

Fit

Lone Peak 9. Altra’s foot-shaped toebox lets your toes spread out. The midfoot is roomy too, so narrow feet may need to size down or lace snugly.

Lone Peak 8. True to size with a foot-shaped toebox, secure midfoot lockdown and generous padding.
